Sulphur is a macro element that is abundant in all reefs around the world, mostly in the form of sulphate.
Although sulfur is a macro element that is usually replenished by water changes and the addition of sulfate-containing foods or other supplements, sulfur can still deplete in the aquarium. Since sulfur is highly associated with bacterial activity, the presence of sulfur in much lower or higher concentrations than those normally present in seawater can lead to bacterial problems.
When corals become ill due to pathogenic bacterial activity (e.g. STN/RTN), it is important to check the sulfur level by ICP analysis and ensure that it is within the ranges indicated below.
Nevertheless, sulphur levels are not yet fully understood and the ideal levels have yet to be determined. However, we recommend a sulphur level of 900mg/l + -5% (i.e. 865-945mg/l), which has been shown to be safe.
Reef Zlements S Sulphur, used in conjunction with a regular testing procedure, allows each aquarist to correct the sulphur level to ensure that the sulphur level in their aquarium remains within the optimum range for their animals.
