The KR 5000 sponge is a replacement filter sponge for the Aqua Medic KR 5000 calcium reactor. It is not intended for use in the aquarium itself, but rather in the reactor.
What is the purpose of the sponge in the reactor?
The sponge has several functions:
1. Filter/retention function
o It retains fine lime and hydrocarbonate particles in the reactor.
o This prevents media residues from entering the aquarium.
2. Uniform water flow
o The sponge distributes the water flow evenly through the reactor material.
3. Protection for pump and outlet
o Prevents particles from clogging pipes, valves, or pumps.
Context: Calcium reactor
The Aqua Medic KR 5000 Calcium Reactor is used in large saltwater aquariums to automatically supply calcium and carbonate hardness (important for coral growth). Lime material is dissolved in the reactor and released into the aquarium.
