Sulfur Pearls are made of pure sulfur. In sulfur-nitrate filters, they serve as a substrate and energy source for the bacteria. As they are broken down by the bacteria, they must be replenished regularly. Caution: Use only in slow-running anaerobic filters for nitrate removal. The pH value and carbonate hardness of the water must be checked regularly. We recommend installing a filter container with hydrocarbonate downstream of the sulfur filter to neutralize the acid produced.
Other Hazards
The molten material is highly flammable. In the event of a fire, toxic, highly irritating, and suffocating gases are produced, including gases containing sulfur dioxide (SO2) (possible pulmonary edema). In exceptional cases, the reduction of the
oxidation product SO2 can result in the formation of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a highly toxic and flammable gas.
