Product description

The salt content in seawater is usually expressed as density in German-speaking countries and is one of the most important water parameters. Many aquarium inhabitants are sensitive to slight changes in their environmental conditions. These should therefore be kept as constant as possible within the optimal range for the respective tank. Natural seawater with an average salinity of 35 ‰ (psu) has a density of approx. 1.023 kg/l at 25 °C. Our recommendation for aquarium water at 25 °C is a value between 1.022 and 1.024 kg/l, depending on the tank population.

Density is to be distinguished from “specific gravity,” which is used in the rest of the world. The Tropic Marin® PRECISION AREOMETER is ideal for accurate and reliable control of the salt content.

Measuring and, in particular, accurately reading the density on the hydrometer is now child's play with the new Tropic Marin® MEASURING CYLINDER. The high-quality plastic measuring cylinder is transparent, has a stable base, and a spout. With a height of 36 cm, it is ideal for determining the density using the Tropic Marin® PRECISION HYDROMETER and for setting the hydrometer down after use. This means that it is no longer necessary to switch off the flow pumps for a measurement in the aquarium; reliable control of the salinity is now possible at any time outside the tank in the simplest possible way.

The Tropic Marin® MEASURING CYLINDER is available individually or as a set together with the Tropic Marin® PRECISION HYDROMETER.

The Tropic Marin® MEASURING CYLINDER is made of PP (polypropylene). The Tropic Marin® PRECISION AREOMETER is made of mouth-blown glass.
Procedure

ATTENTION: Density is temperature-dependent. Density decreases as temperature increases. Therefore, for a correct result, the water temperature should be 25 °C during measurement.

Fill the measuring cylinder with a maximum of 400 ml of seawater (water temperature = 25 °C).
The hydrometer should be dry and clean.
Immerse the hydrometer in the water until it floats freely.
Now read the salinity on the green scale of the hydrometer at the level of the water surface – NOT at the level of the surface film (meniscus) that rises at the edges!
Then rinse the measuring cylinder thoroughly with fresh tap water or osmosis water to remove any salt residues. These could distort future measurement results.

Tropic Marin® SEA SALT CLASSIC is an ideal foundation for the care and growth of all marine organisms in an aquarium and to maintain the alkalinity in a 9-10 °dH range. Especially for reef aquaria we recommend the use of Tropic Marin® PRO-REEF SEA SALT. This salt has an optimized concentration of calcium and magnesium, which promote the growth of corals and maintain the alkalinity in a 7-8 °dH range.

For the daily supply of calcium and carbonate hardness, we recommend the new Tropic Marin® CARBOCALCIUM or the application of the well-known Balling method with Tropic Marin® ORIGINAL BALLING Components.
