Fauna Marin Skim Breeze Reactor is a special air filter for connection to a protein skimmer for air purification and CO2 reduction.

Instructions for use:

• To fill the filter, slightly loosen the screw, insert the appropriate hose adapter for the protein skimmer, and close the filter lid.

Dosage:

• 1000 ml Skim Breeze per 500 liters, for 4-6 weeks

Dosage instructions:

• If the granulate is completely purple, it must be replaced
• A change in color of the used material does not mean that it is active again.
• Carefully fill the Skim Breeze granules into the filter provided and connect to the skimmer.
• Do not put the granules into the water, do not inhale the dust, use gloves.
• Always keep the can closed and store away from sunlight.

What is the relationship between CO2 content and pH value in the aquarium?
The pH value of the water in the aquarium is strongly dependent on the CO2 dissolved in it. The more dissolved CO2 there is in the aquarium water, the lower the pH value will be. Conversely, the pH value can be raised by reducing the amount of CO2 entering the water.
Corals consume CO2 during photosynthesis during the day and then release it back into the water at night through respiration. This natural process also explains the daily cycle of the pH value in the aquarium. This shows that the value is lowest shortly before the start of the lighting phase and reaches its highest value before the end of the lighting phase.

How does CO2 get into the aquarium?
Normal outside air has a CO2 content of around 0.04%. However, it should be noted that an aquarium is usually located in a closed room, which is normally also occupied by people and possibly pets, whose breathing significantly increases the CO2 content of the air.
When we exhale, the air contains a CO2 content of around 4%.
The presence of humans and animals therefore causes the CO2 content in the room to rise steadily. Regular ventilation can reduce the CO2 content in the room, but this is not always possible or advisable due to weather conditions.

The water in the aquarium has the property of exchanging gases with the ambient air. This means that a higher CO2 content in the ambient air also leads directly to an increased CO2 value in the water.
Since most modern saltwater aquariums are equipped with a powerful skimmer for filtration, there is an extremely strong gas exchange due to the vigorous mixing of air and water in the skimmer, apart from the moving water surface. This also causes large amounts of CO2 in the ambient air to be dissolved in the water. This lowers the pH value in the aquarium.

This is where the Skim Breeze CO2 reactor comes in.

How does the Skim Breeze reactor increase the pH value in the aquarium?
The Skim Breeze CO2 reactor from Fauna Marin is filled with a special filter medium called “Skim Breeze.”
This has the property of extracting all CO2 from the air with which it comes into contact.
This makes it possible to eliminate the CO2 input from the ambient air, which is fed into the tank in large quantities through skimming.

The reactor is filled with the filter material and connected to the air intake of the skimmer, which draws the air through the filter material before it comes into contact with the water. This simple principle minimizes the CO2 input into the aquarium and increases the pH value.

What does a higher pH value in the aquarium achieve?

• A pH value of the water closer to the natural value of 8.3
• Increased stone coral growth due to better calcification
• A smaller daily fluctuation in the pH value of the water
• Increased reproduction rate of calcareous organisms such as shelled snails
