Magnesium is the second-largest component of sea-salt (after sodium chloride). The magnesium content of natural saltwater is about 1300 mg/l, which is considerably higher than the calcium content (only 400mg/l). When adding minerals to saltwater aquariums, it was mainly the calcium quantity that was taken into consideration. Recent research results show however, that the regular addition of magnesium is indeed important for the increase of the calcium concentration in the tank. In aquariums with an insufficient magnesium concentration, calcium will be depleted much more quickly than calcium carbonate.
The addition of PREIS MAGNESIUM- IODINE CONCENTRATE will also help reduce the phosphate content as phosphate can only be bound in the presence of sufficient magnesium. Poor growth of calciferous algae, gorgonia and stone coral is a sure sign of an unbalanced magnesiumcalcium ratio. Especially in the treatment of osmosis water, many aquarium owners use only calcium preparations to raise the hardness.
