For bacteria and other microscopic organisms to assimilate nitrogen and phosphorus, carbon must be present in sufficient quantities.
With the increasing efficiency of filtration systems, low and ultra-low nutrient aquariums are becoming more common. These systems are often low in carbon. When a system is low in carbon, it means that "biological filtration" is not running as efficiently as it should, and nutrients such as NO3 and PO4 are likely to increase and become pollutants unless other forms of filtration are used.
CarboPlus increases the growth and reproduction rate of micro-organisms and improves biological filtration by allowing microscopic plankton and bacteria to consume nitrate and phosphate. These bacteria can then be removed via mechanical filtration or used as food by other organisms in our aquariums, such as sponges, corals, mussels, tunicates, etc.
CarboPlus is a natural source of biologically harmless carbon and replaces combustible sources such as ethanol or vodka.
When you start dosing CarboPlus, we recommend that you start with 1 ml per 100 l daily and increase the amount as needed up to 3 ml per 100 l daily.
Measure NO3 and PO4 frequently with reliable test kits, because if they are present in the correct ratio (C 106:N 16:P 1), they should decrease over time to the desired levels and eventually to 0 ppm (which is not desirable).
Once NO3 and PO4 reach the recommended levels, reduce the dose to ensure that the nutrients remain near these levels and do not drop to 0ppm (our recommended levels are NO3 ~5ppm and PO4 ~0.04ppm).
If either NO3 or PO4 is trending towards 0ppm while the other is above 0ppm, your system is likely to be limited by the depleted nutrient, and in this case the existing nutrient will either not be reduced or will be increased over time. Dose NitroPlus or PhosPlus to correct this deficiency and optimise your "biological filtration".
If you want a system with high nutrient input and high nutrient output, you can continue to dose the maximum daily dose of CarboPlus, but you will probably need to dose NitroPlus and PhosPlus to ensure the correct nutrient ratio/level.
